Fire Up Your 4/20 With This New Mix by DJ Paypal
From those of us here at TEB: Happy 4/20. In the spirit of the day, we asked Teklife member DJ Paypal to deliver a fresh mix of smoked-out footwork and juke classics.
DJ Paypal may be best known for his 2015 debut album, Sold Out – a dizzying array of footwork tunes that turn up the genre’s hypnotic and psychedelic sides while lacing it with jagged, uncanny samples – on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint, but his frantic DJ sets have also won him high praise across the scene. (He also played the inaugural edition of Neana and AUCO’s Infinite Quest, which we covered in the first edition of our B2Beats series).
Paypal’s music is playful, weird and tripped out – basically, it’s exactly what we want to be listening to today, if you catch our drift. The 4/20 mix is a trip through footwork, with tracks by Teklife members like DJ Spinn and the late pioneer DJ Rashad (R.I.P.) bumping up against rap from La Chat and remixes from Mall Music labelmate DJ Orange Julius. Expect syncopated percussion, brain-scrambling rhythms, hazy atmospheres and non-stop on-theme vocal samples. In the enigmatic artist’s words: “for your smoking pleasure only, please enjoy responsibly.”
