Not Philip D. Kick, Philip K. Dick. Try saying that quickly….. Responsible for some of the 20th century’s seminal works of science fiction such as Ubik, Blade Runner, Total Recall, A Scanner Darkly and Minority Report, Dick is probably the genre’s most prolific and successful author. He deals mostly with sociological, political and metaphysical themes in novels which are dense with sinister corporations, authoritarian governments and altered states of being. Although he died at a relatively young age – he was 53 when he passed away in 1983 – his influence continues to be felt with fans across the world devouring his books and film adaptations, even going so far as to make an android of the author. So if you fancy settling down and slipping into an altered state of reality, we suggest you head over to the Open Culture website where a number of Dick’s novels that are available as free eBooks have been collated.
