Hear The Psychedelic Brilliance Of DJ Koze With This Classic Mix From 2002

The recently unearthed tape documents a legendary night at a club in the small German city of Jena.

There must have been something special in the air in 2002. Just yesterday we posted a superb Jeff Mills mix of that vintage, and now we have an equally great—but different—dj-set by DJ Koze. The set documents a legendary night at Kassablanca in Jena, a small town in the German state of Thuringia. Hosted by local power house label Freude am Tanzen, home of the then notorious Wighnomy Brothers, Marek Hemmann and Mathias Kaden, the recording showcases the genius of early DJ Koze. And while that might seem hyperbolic, its accompanying article with text and photos paints a pretty impressive photo. Mythology or no mythology though, the mix is impressive for its deep and dreamy groove. Listen to it below.

Just this week, Koze released Knock Knock, his latest album. A flowing and soulful psychedelic tapestry of a work, it features a roster of interesting collaborators that surprisingly includes one of the MC’s from ’90s hip-hop outfit Arrested Development. You can stream the album below.
