Hear The New Age LP That Turned Two Folk Musicians Into Biofeedback Ambient Producers

Chris Spheeris and Paul Voudouris’ 1982 album Passage is a unique example of powerful sonic therapy.

Behind its lush, subtly-morphing clouds of sound, there is a rigorous philosophy behind ambient music. One tenant of the genre has always been to channel the therapeutic, psycho-acoustic possibilities of sound. In this regard, few records can match Spheeris and Voudouris‘ 1982 album Passage.

Passage was first commissioned in 1982 by a biofeedback company researching the power of technology to control otherwise automatic bodily processes, like heart rate, muscle tension and blood pressure, in order to relieve chronic pain and other health issues. While complex and intellectual on paper, the result is a graceful ambient epic, where sparkling palettes of electric and acoustic guitars slowly weave in and out of synth washes and airy strings, colliding to create one of the most effective new age albums dedicated to channeling the healing powers of sound.
