The Bulgarian performer proves that creativity should always come first.
Just over a year ago, we caught up with the friendliest gear nerd around, KiNK, to pick his brains about what makes for an unforgettable live set. Who better to ask, after all, than the man widely considered to be at the helm of one of the best live house and techno hardware sets on the circuit?
KiNK has always had a set up that expands, rather than restricts, his capacity to improvise: “I wanted to focus on developing a system that would let me improvise and change it up every time instead of preparing everything beforehand…There’s no tracklist or arrangement, so every time I play those tracks they sound completely different.”
Now, thanks to a masterclass that KiNK gave at Inner City Electronic in Leeds, you get to see his talent for improvisation in action. Despite being left with only a drum machine and a microphone, he manages to churn out a thumping set on the fly while explaining his philosophy. The video also includes an insightful and open discussion about his process, where he states that ultimately it’s one’s approach to music—and not the gear one owns—that matters.
