Listen To This Cosmic Disco Mix Recorded Live At Cult-Favorite Berlin Club Sameheads

The record Loft Berlin Christian Pannenborg Records Vinyl

Three of the original Vulkandance residents throw down a set for the ages.

In our Berlin Club Guide for 2018, we lovingly described Sameheads as “a club that acts as a soapbox for budding avant-garde electronic artists.” Of all the weird and eccentric parties that have passed through the Neukölln music haunt, Vulkandance might be the perfect representative of the cult basement club’s attitude and aesthetic.

Started 10 years ago in Berlin, Vulkandance is, in founder DJ Nomad’s words, a celebration of “Crate digging, leftfield world disco music, Afro Funky, Antillais Zouk, Cosmic and Tropical Island dance music.” Soon a trifecta of residents joined Nomad at the party: the irrepressible disco DJ Hunee, Record Loft head honcho Christian Pannenborg—that is, DJ Rainbow, a.k.a. the Cheers Chris—and Bulgarian digger Emil Doesn’t Drive.

The recent Vulkandance in mid-October brought Nomad, Christian and Emil together for the first time in seven years. And as you’d expect when you cram three of the most respected diggers in Europe behind a set of turntables in a sweaty basement, the results are incredible. Cosmic disco rubs shoulders with rare afro funk while tropical vibes color the mix from start to finish. It’s truly a special recording, and one that only reasserts the vital position that Sameheads holds in Berlin’s underground. Listen to two hours of the mix above.
