One of the world’s most popular electronic instruments finally has a successor.

Teenage Engineering’s new sequencer is upon us. Teased at the NAMM trade fair back in 2016, the OP-Z is a follow-up to the much-loved OP-1 that sees a whole bag of new tricks and features crammed into its deceptively small frame.

The OP–Z is a fully-portable 16-track sequencer and synthesizer, boasting both sample and synthesis-based sounds. And while the OP-1 was geared explicitly toward music production, the OP-Z sees Teenage Engineering turn its attention to visual, light and even 3-D sequencing as well.

Each track in the sequencer runs completely independently from the others, meaning individual tracks can run at various speeds and have different lengths, metrics and loop points, creating dynamic and shifting tracks that break the rigid bounds of traditional sequencing. It also boasts an on-board microphone and the ability to wirelessly connect to iOS devices, which will provide a visual interface for all your knob twiddling.

The most eye-catching aspect of the OP-Z, at least in our opinion, is its incredibly multi-tasking ability: it sequences audio, visuals, lights and 3-D imaging at the same time, giving it the ability to control entire audio-visual experiences on its own.

Watch videos of the sequencer in action above and below. The OP-Z is shipping now and retails at €599. You can find all the tech specs for the new sequencer over at the Teenage Engineering website here.
