This Video Goes Deep Into John Peel's Collection Of Rare Cuts

The legendary DJ digs up some of the hidden gems from his mind-blowing record collection.

Across a glittering year career of nearly four decades, John Peel was a leading voice in uncovering and promoting the sounds of the underground. Nearly every artist or band that Peel featured on his BBC 1 radio show—including his famed “Peel Sessions”—has become a fundamental name in the history of independent music. Be it Aphex Twin, Crass or Depeche Mode, the Peel Sessions are a living testament to just how brilliant the British DJ was as a listener and avid collector.

So what kind of “weird, precious or beautiful” records, as Peel described them, can be found in his own personal archives? It turns out plenty, and Peel was willing as ever to share them with his audience. In this one hour video, the selector guides us through some of the strangest and most stunning record sleeves in his collection, uncovering brilliant music along the way—from early ’70s Turkish psych to Paisley Underground gems. You can watch it in its entirety below.
