Watch Synth Wizard Suzanne Ciani Perform On A Classic Buchla

Suzanne Ciani's New Synth-Heavy Album Will Be Pressed On Super Rare Quadrophonic Vinyl

The synth maestro gives an absolute education in how to tame the iconic Buchla modular.

There are few figures so intimately associated with the art and magic of Buchla synthesizers than Suzanne Ciani. From her very earliest encounters with the modular equipment in trippy West Coast sound labs, to her celebrated mid-’70s performances, Ciani’s name has become synonymous with the creativity possibilities that Buchla’s instruments pried open for a generation of avant-garde composers.

Fortunately for us and a new line of experimental musicians, Ciani’s mastery of the synth shows no signs of slowing down. On the contrary, with the assistance of a few modern instruments and tools, her virtuosity has gone to even greater heights. Proof is this live performance that Ciani gave last year at Abeleton’s Loop Conference. In a mere 15 minutes, she manages to push the Buchla’s circuitry in crazy new directions, eliciting wild pops, drones and flittering sequences from its unruly oscillators. It’s proof of a true master at work. You can watch it below.
