“I thought it was amazing that there was no show about Berlin’s famous nightlife,” says filmmaker Marco Kreuzpainter.

A new German television series that plunges into the underworld of Berlin’s infamous nightlife is set to premiere this Friday on Amazon Prime. Beat is the brainchild of German filmmaker Marco Kreuzpainter who—having lived in Berlin for 12 years—decided to channel all of his own club knowledge into a thriller that explores the freedom, excess and hedonism of the city’s celebrated club scene.

“I put all the memories about those 12 years onto a page,” explained Kreuzpaintner to People Magazine. The show centres on Robert Schlag, a techno scene mainstay, as he is recruited by the European Secret Services for a dangerous sting operation.

Kreuzpainter also notes that alongside the major narrative arc, club politics are also put under the spotlight. “These nightclubs have a very free way to talk about sexuality,” Kreuzpaintner says, “There’s no pictures, no VIP. Everyone is the same. The people dress in black or dark or fetish, but it’s not a dirty place. It’s an expression of freedom.” Check out the trailer for the series above before it drops November 9.
