Watch a video feature from our EB.tv archive featuring Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins.

Without Juan Atkins, techno wouldn’t exist. His recordings, first as Cybotron and then later as Model 500 and other aliases, created the blueprint for the entire genre. This is why he is often referred to as the “Originator” when he’s put into the context of the legendary Belleville Three, which also includes Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson.

For this week’s YouTube video, we’ve uploaded a special archival feature from our archive. Originally published in 2013 in issue 1-13 of our Slices DVD series, it’s an interview with the man at Berlin’s Tresor club. It’s a special place for Atkins and other Detroit DJs who were first brought to Germany by the club in the early ’90s. Since then, the relationship between them has continued to flourish.

Watch it above. For more video heat from the 313 (the city’s famous telephone code), watch our Detroit Techno/House Legends playlist below. Like what you see? Subscribe to our YouTube channel for more videos like this delivered to you every Tuesday.
