Editor’s Choice 18

What’s that? You want to know what’s been going in our ears this week, reverberating our cochleas and sending broader vibrations throughout our bodies and by extension our audio-addled souls? That’s a coincidence: here’s this week’s Editor’s Choice.~ Photo: Michael Lutz

Four Tet – Lion (Jamie xx Remix)

I have to admit that this is a bit of an obvious pick: both Four Tet and Jamie xx play in major leagues of their own when it comes to musical Zeitgeist. Then again this track isn’t an instant dancefloor shaker as one might expect. Jamie xx strips down Four Tet’s “Lion” to its stems: the original’s straightforward beat is remodeled, slowed down with a mellow garage beat / dubstep rhythm, and now features a melancholic piano theme. File under: inner cinema music.

Grouper – Alien Observer (Saqqara Bootleg Remix)

Speaking of melancholy: Seattle-based Tyler Jones aka Saqqara recently took on Grouper’s “Alien Observer, transforming the original’s dreamy vocals into hypnotic sound samples and adding broken beat elements.

The Sky Was Pink – Vessels (Nathan Fake cover)

The Border Community classic is lovingly revisited by the Leeds post-rock band. The degree of fidelity shown to the source material suggests they’ve had their heads turned, somewhat.

Lana Del Rey – Ride (MJ Cole Vocal Remix)

I know right.
