Munich’s Zenker Brothers are at the top of their game right now. Both Marco and Dario were already household names in the techno world as solo artists, but since joining forces in the studio, they’ve garnered praise from all corners of electronic music—including from Berghain don Marcel Dettmann, who recommended their lauded debut album last year. Their label Ilian Tape has also gone from strength to strength; earlier this month, they released the stunning debut album from enigmatic producer Skee Mask to great acclaim. Long story short, it was time to follow up the Zenker Slices special and invite Marco and Dario for an EB radio takeover. They’ve brought some of their favorite techno tuneage, including classics by Jeff Mills, WK7 or Cab Drivers.
Techno duo and Ilian Tape label heads
The Zenker Brothers are Dario and Marco Zenker, from Munich. In 2007, they founded the Ilian Tape label, which has overseen releases from the likes of Stenny, Jonas Kopp and the brothers themselves and earned a devout following among so-called techno heads.
Before beginning to produce as a unit, both Dario and Marco had established promising solo careers: highly prolific, Dario has released upwards of five EPs per year on various labels since 2006. His most recent outings include a pair of 12″s on Ilian Tape (2013) and the Mörsin EP on cult label The Trilogy Tapes. Marco, on the other hand, has aligned almost exclusively with Ilian Tape for his solo releases, and dropped the 2626 12″ in 2014.
The brother’s debut Zenker Brothers record arrived in 2011, which was followed by EPs on storied Berlin club-cum-imprint Tresor and Berghain resident Marcel Fengler’s Index Marcel Fengler imprint. Their first full-length, Immersion, dropped on Ilian Tape in 2015 and featured weighty atmospherics and knotty rhythmic structures. In addition to critical praise, the LP earned a recommendation from techno lynchpin Marcel Dettmann, who called it “neither overtly aggressive, nor too happy. It’s just dark and trippy, and that’s the way I like it.”
