EB Video Premiere: Crime & The City Solution – Goddess

It’s been 20 years since the last Crime & The City Solution record, which, even in today’s reunion culture, makes the release of American Twilight on Mute feel like an event. Particularly if you consider yourself a fan Simon Bonney’s ’80s outfit, a band who unfairly never quite got a foothold on the post-punk top tier due to endless comparisons to fellow Australian-Berlin transplants Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds who shared both a love of creaking Southern Gothic and handful of personnel (both Rowland S Howard and Mick Harvey played in C&CS line-up in the early incarnation). This record doesn’t tinker with the original formula that Bonney thrashed out in a debached Berlin all those years ago, but serves as a vital, blood-red statement of undiluted intent. Welcome back.

Not only are we hosting the video premiere of “Goddess”, the grizzled first single taken from the album, but we’re accompanying it with a 15-still Frame x Frame featuring commentary by C&CS  guitarist and longstanding Einstürzende Neubauten member Alexander Hacke. It all makes perfect sense…

10 x 4 – Flume

10 x 4 - Flume Flume is not even in his twenties but very soon, we reckon this young Australian is going making waves with his half-stepping beats and nagging melodies. R&B dragged through the digital dimension, and spat out at the after-party his music is a heady brew of nostalgic hooks and futuristic arrangements. With his first release -the ‘Sleepless EP’ about to drop on Future Classic (download the track ‘Over You’ at the bottom of the page) we thought as the perfect introduction to EB readers we would ask Flume to get stuck in to 10 x 4 .

Favourite part of the day to create?
Daytime is over rated. For me its all about the night time production sessions! Pretty much all my best work is done during late night six hour music binges.

First musical love?
Believe it or not, my first real musical love was with a genre named trance. When I was about 9 years old I heard a friends older brother playing it in his room. From the second those lush trance chords started playing, I was hooked.
Even today, trance music has a strong influence on the beats i’m producing. There’s something about euphoric chord progressions that I will never get over.

Last musical love?
Flying Lotus

One thing you cannot live with out?
Caffeine, is my drug of choice. It gets the creative juices flowing. Behind every track I make, there’s a fresh pot of lovely coffee.

One thing you would live without if you could?

Favourite instrument?
Well I do love the saxophone. I’ve played it for years, but not so much anymore. I have always been quite fond of the piano, learning to play it is definitely on the ‘to do’ list.

Biggest surprise?
The amount of love for Sleepless.

Last thing that inspired you?
An artist from the states ‘Shlohmo’ recently remixed Burials track ‘Shell Of Light’. A beautiful piece of work.

A place to create?
I write all my music in my home studio. But when it comes to new ideas, they often come about whilst surfing, waiting for waves. Long car rides.. In the shower.. Anywhere relaxing is a place for new ideas.

Secret tip?
About six months ago my computer went haywire, some stuff worked, some stuff didn’t. I have a whole bunch of different plugins, but It limited me to only being able to use one synth. It was funny because it actually pushed me to be more creative and to use what i had. Rather than scrolling through endless banks of presets, i was making my own. Tracks were coming together faster. Its not really a secret, but it’s golden. ‘Less is more’.

The Avalanches new album finally in sight

The Avalanches new album finally in sight

Finally. The second album by The Avalanches, which has been over ten years in the making, is just about ready. Or it is according to Modular boss Steve Pavlovic who will be releasing the album through his Modular Recordings imprint early next year.

Speaking to Australian website The Music Network, Pavlovic explained that bar "some tweaking to the production elements" the album is finished, and new music from the band will be heard later this year. Accordingly the band are celebrating the finishing of the album with "a little party".

Since the release of their debut album Since I Left You in 2000, about seven total sea changes have occurred in the world of ‘electronic’ music, but interest about The Avalanches has waned little with the album appearing in many best albums of the decade lists.
