Our EB Favorites of the Week: March 17, 2013

Missed the past 698 episodes of our daily feature, the EB Favorite of the Day? No problem, now you can catch up with it every Sunday!

Our weekly column, EB Favorites of the Week, collects seven songs that we’ve ‘liked’ from the past seven days.

And while we usually don’t comment on the tracks as we tell you about them on Twitter, SoundCloud and our Electronic Beats Facebook pages, you can find some extra information below.

SUNDAY, March 10, 2013 | DJ Koze – “My Plans” feat. Matthew Dear
It’s not much longer until the release of DJ Koze’s new album Amygdala. While we’ll be telling you more about the record shortly before the release, I can’t help but celebrate each new Kosi track that pops up on the internet. Especially when they’re as charming as this downtempo number with feature guest Matthew Dear.

MONDAY, March 11, 2013 | Ada – “Faith” (Koze’s Grungerwomen Remix)
Not only is DJ Koze a great producer of his own, but he also knows how to treat other people’s work—his remix compilation Reincarnations (The Remix Chapter 2001-2009) showcased just that. Here’s him reworking Ada’s “Faith” into an intimate, fragile and detailed track for her new Paws 1 release on Areal Records (flipside features a Superpitcher remix; highly recommended, too!).

TUESDAY, March 12, 2013 | Fort Romeau – “SW9” (Lowtec Remix)
Jens Kuhn aka Lowtec is always a safe bet when it comes to quality productions and releases. The Workshop label founder releases his own music as well as records by Kassem Mosse, Move D, and others. I didn’t really need to listen to his remix for UK artist Mike Norris’ Fort Romeau project to know I’d love it, and my initial feeling didn’t lead astray.

WEDNESDAY, March 13, 2013 | Zebra Katz – “Sex Sellz” (Teeth Remix VIP)
Regular readers of Electronic Beats know almost everything about both Teeth and Zebra Katzwe’ve been covering both for quite a while. It shouldn’t come as a big surprise, then, that a remix by Teeth of a new Zebra Katz cut would instantly catch our attention.

THURSDAY, March 14, 2013 | Emika – “Wicked Game”
Know Chris Issak’s 1989 original of “Wicked Game”? Now try Emika’s cover version, taken from her upcoming album Dva on Ninja Tune.

FRIDAY, March 15, 2013 | Depeche Mode – Soothe My Soul
Maybe I’m not the right candidate to judge whether this new Depeche Mode song is a step forward or not. All I can tell is that it works very well in terms of pop music—the sudden synth melody at 0:53 immersed me into the song, and the short break at 1:07 makes me want more Delta Machine.

SATURDAY, March 16, 2013 | James Blake – “And Holy Ghost”
James Blake material can be split into two categories: album music, and single/b-sides/independent release music. “And Holy Ghost” belongs to the latter. This isn’t something the pop mainstream has been waiting for, but still it features his unique sound signature. Out soon on his 1-800-Dinosaur label! (Come to our Cologne festival for the album hits.)

Our EB Favorites of the Week: March 10th, 2013

Missed the past 691 episodes of our daily feature, the ‘EB Favorite of the Day’? No problem, now you can catch up with it every Sunday!

Our weekly column, ‘EB Favorites of the Week’, collects seven songs that we’ve ‘liked’ from the past seven days.

And while we usually don’t comment on the tracks as we tell you about them on Twitter, SoundCloud and our Electronic Beats Facebook pages, you can find some extra information below.

SUNDAY, March 3, 2013 | M.I.A. – “Matangi Mix for Kenzo”
There’s nothing like a smashing Bollywood soundtrack for your fashion show. With “Matangi”, our favorite Tamil-British artist Mathangi ‘M.I.A.‘ Arulpragasam delivered a slamming, nine minute long mini-mix for fashion outlet Kenzo’s Fall 2013 show at Paris Fashion Week. Get ready for a wild ride through exotic terrain.

MONDAY, March 4, 2013 | Cubenx – “Francouer”
I had the pleasure of meeting Mexican producer César Urbina aka Cubenx in 2011—a lovely fella! The Infiné-signed artist is currently working on new material, and his new, dreamy, Montmartre-inspired house track “Francouer” was just the right thing to ease us into the new week.

TUESDAY, March 5, 2013 | Sinkane – “Warm Spell” (Barker & Baumecker Alt2 Remix)
Ostgut Ton artist and Berghain/Panorama Bar resident ND_Baumecker has a knack for pop music, both when it comes to his late DJ sets at Pannebar and when he’s (re)working other people’s music. His joint remix with fellow musician Sam Barker for DFA’s Sinkane is one of those pop-meets-techno-meets-epic-choral-elements moments which gives you goosebumps.

WEDNESDAY, March 6, 2013 | Rustie – “Slasherr”
A new single from one of 2011’s most profiled future bass producers. Just imagine yourself inside a packed club, wait for the (*ahem*) ‘drop’ at 0:52, and think of everyone going wild. We need to catch up with this guy live sometime soon!

THURSDAY, March 7, 2013 | Vladislav Delay – “Lumi” (Edit 2013)
Originally published on his Whistleblower album in 2007, this new, fragile, and intimate edit of “Lumi” is the perfect musical antithesis to the rest of this week’s favorites.

FRIDAY, March 8, 2013 | Justin Timberlake – “Suit & Tie” (Four Tet Remix)
Haters gonna hate! FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006) was one of my favorite contemporary pop albums, and I’m not ashamed of admitting that Four Tet’s new JT rework works perfectly fine for me.

SATURDAY, March 9, 2013 | Chateau Marmont – “The Maze” (Chrome Canyon Remix)
Balearic disco alarm! Don’t listen if you dislike cheesy synths and big pop moments. Still, deal with this: there’s nothing better on a cold winter day like this than imagining yourself on a beach reclining in a deckchair while having a drink out of a coconut.

Our EB Favorites of the Week: March 3rd, 2013

If you’ve been following Electronic Beats for the past 681 days, chances are good that at least once or twice you’ve come across our daily feature, the ‘EB Favorite of the Day‘—a single track recommendation we offer to all of our Twitter and SoundCloud followers, as well as all Facebook fans of Electronic Beats.

People have often asked for a collated playlist with all these EB favorites. Today we kick off a new weekly column, the ‘EB Favorites of the Week’, collecting seven songs that we liked in the past days. And while we usually don’t comment on the tracks as we tell you about them during the week, now you can find some extra information below.

SUNDAY, February 24, 2013 | LB – “Superstitious Heart
Let’s not discuss wether or not Little Boots is everyone’s favorite. It’s pop music, like it or leave it. “Superstitious Heart” is one of the new Victoria Hesketh-songs, produced by Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford and Maya Jane Coles.

MONDAY, February 25, 2013 | John Cale – “Living With You” (Laurel Halo Remix)
Musical worlds colliding: Welsh musician and Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale was reworked by American producer and sound explorer Laurel Halo. Cale’s viola drones and piano keystrokes are reworked into something more dubby here; ‘music for headphones’ might be a good description for this.

TUESDAY, February 26, 2013 | Cloud Boat – “Wanderlust”
Speaking of music for headphones, there are some similarities between Cloud Boat and artists such as James Blake and Mount Kimbie. Their music is mostly hushed tones, guitar samples, and fragile electronica blended into something that usually got tagged post-dubstep. Cloud Boat’s new double A-sided single is out on Monday, March 4th.

WEDNESDAY, February 27, 2013 | Tricky – “Nothing’s Changed”
Fully agree with that title! This is the classic Bristol sound of the Knowle West Boy. “Nothing’s changed/I still feel the same” sings Tricky and featured vocalist Francesca Belmonte, and if the rest of his new album False Idols can keep up with this track, you probably want to preorder the album, out in May.

THURSDAY, February 28, 2013 | Peaking Lights – “Beautiful Son” (John Talabot’s Acetate Dub)
Wait for it. Wait for it. Here come’s the melody. This John Talabot dub version of Peaking Lights is something we’d like to hear during the closing hours of club sets very soon-ish.

FRIDAY, March 1, 2013 | Major Lazer – “Watch Out For This (Bumaye)” feat. Busy Signal, The Flexican & FS Green
Diplo’s digital dancehall alter ego Major Lazer is back with a new album Free the Universe. Since the release of their debut album Guns Don’t Kill People… Major Lazer have rapidly grown from music geek’s latest discovery to mainstream pop music, and we recommend you to go watch them see play live if you haven’t done so yet—satisfaction guaranteed!

SATURDAY, March 2, 2013 | Roosevelt – “Around You”
As you may already know, Cologne-based Marius Lauber aka Roosevelt will be playing our forthcoming Prague festival. And while this festival’s already sold out, you should catch up with this charming, Greco-Roman-bound chap at one of his other live shows he’s playing throughout March and April. Until then, the balearic-driven disco track “Around You” is a prefect taster for Roosevelt’s live shows and debut EP.
