Sounds of the Universe, the West London Record shop owned by Soul Jazz Records, is starting its own offshoot label of the same name with a gritty underground house workout. ‘Shikaakwa’ comes courtesy of none other that Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being. Moss, who is the mystical figure behind Chicago based record label Mathematics Recordings, has been involved in electronic music for the past two decades and is something of a veteran in the shadier and more experimental corners of Chicago. ‘Shikaakwa’, which is the Native American Indian name for Chicago, is a multi tentacled beast, deep and raw with crunchy hissing drums and a queasy low end, it’s hypnotic and melancholic and comes laden with a liberal dusting of mysticism. Look out for it when it is released at the end of January.
One of the most popular and influential figures in the world of bass music – Kevin Martin – aka The Bug has complied the latest Soul Jazz compilation alongside label boss Stuart Baker.
Invasion of the Killer Mysteron Sounds is a reggae focused collection that spans two discs with a distinctly digital flavour. As usual with Soul Jazz, they have managed to bring the best of the old and the new together with a selection that takes in the digi-dancehall leanings of producers such as Diplo, King Jammy, Roots Manuva and Fat Eyes.
Tying in nicely with the comic book stylings of the cover art (which you can view here) the release is accompanied by a limited edition graphic novel by Italian artist Paolo Parisi.
Soul Jazz Records will release Invasion Of The Mysteron Killer Sounds on June 16th, 2011.
