Klaus Nomi kicked off his career as a performance artist in New York, but his notoriety spiked when he appeared as David Bowie’s backup singer on A 1979 episode of Saturday Night Live. In a new article for Pitchork, writer Kathy Iandoli explores the legacy of a man who purportedly “self-identified as an alien, and to all intents and purposes… looked like one.” The title track to Bowie’s upcoming album, Blackstar, “has a Nomi-like uncanniness,” writes Iandoli.
