Shaharut, a small village close to Israel’s Egyptian border, was the home of six siblings. Their parent’s record collection ensured they grew up on prog-rock, and a healthy dose of Yememite folk via their grandparents completed their musical education.

This particular brand of folk was shunned in Israel’s past; it’s only now that young people are rediscovering those old traditions. That’s where A-WA began—a merging of past and present with an infectious sound and lyrics addressing social issues and female perspectives.
