Like the TB-303, the piano was not very popular when it first came out.
From classical music to techno, it’s hard to imagine modern music without the piano. And that’s part of what makes this video so fascinating. It features the oldest piano currently in existence. It’s a model from 1720 that’s firmly in the style of Bartolomeo Cristofori’s original design, the gravecembalo col piano et forte. Its sound may surprise you—it sounds like a particularly expressive harpsichord. And, in fact, it took a while for the piano to overtake the harpsichord in popularity. Check below to listen to one of the first compositions for piano played on the oldest piano in the world.
