Watch The First Ever TED Talk On Record Digging
Alex Charpentier talks about the importance of preserving rare music and giving it new life.
It was only a matter of time. With the much talked about resurgence of vinyl, the massive influx of reissue labels dedicated solely to unearthing rare and obscure records, and, of course, the celebration of deep and eclectic record collections the world over comes the first ever TED talk about record digging.
Alex Charpentier (a.k.a. DJ Lexis)—the main force behind the online digger platform Music Is My Sanctuary and the 24 Hours Of Vinyl events—talks about record digging as a cultural phenomenon and archeological practice wherein diggers collectively preserve rare, obscure and forgotten music and simultaneously give it new life. “We need to get over this superstar digger phase we seem to be stuck into these days,” Charpentier says. “At the end of the day, the glory should go to the artist who made the tune… and our role should be about giving beautiful music a second chance to be heard by as many people as possible.” Watch the talk in full below.
