Zurich City Government Has Officially Embraced Techno Culture

The Swiss city has recognized techno clubbing as being a part of its UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Good news from Switzerland: Zurich has officially recognized its techno culture as being an important part of the city’s cultural fabric. It has done this by recognizing techno clubbing as a part of its UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage items. The designation comes in part because of a desire to change the image of the city and the area it resides in. Walter Leimgruber, a professor at the University of Basel who helped with the designation, told the Limmattaler Zeitung—roughly translated—”The development of techno culture in Zurich, with its street parade and distinct club scene, gives Zurich a youthful, hedonistic and international image.”

Unfortunately, this recognition doesn’t bring the kind of tax breaks for club owners seen recently in Vienna or Berlin. However, we imagine this can only mean good things for the club scene in Zurich.
