This Chinese Music Video Is Everything Cyberpunk Should Be
The video for Howie Lee’s “四海 Four Seas” is a surreal meditation on cities and urban space.
Howie Lee is a Beijing-based producer, visual artist and label boss at Do Hits Records, and has been at the helm of China’s underground beat scene for the past two years. His new EP, Homeless, is a futuristic amalgam of electronic noise, synthesized vocals and abstract rhythms that refer to “the surrounding waters of the traditional Chinese world view,” according to Lee. The latest music video for “四海 Four Seas”, a track off of the release, is a visual representation of just how futuristic and cyperpunk-indebted Lee’s music is. The zany video moves through dreamlike cityscapes and super abstract visual atmospheres.“A lot of time I feel my body is trapped in this urban cube and physically cannot go anywhere,” he says. “I feel that the loneliness created by social tension is unhealthy.”
