This Ant Named Radiohead Gives Us The Creeps
Sericomyrmex radioheadi sounds like it should be the next Radiohead album title.
Next time you’re walking through the Venezuelan Amazon be careful where you put your feet—you might just accidentally stomp on the new Radiohead ant species. Yes, scientists from the Smithsonian Institution’s Ant Lab in Washington, D.C. have named a new species of “silky ants” after the British rock experimentalists.
The naming is meant to honor not only Radiohead’s incredible cultural impact but also the environmental conservation efforts of each member of the band. Just so you know, Sericomyrmex radioheadi are from the fungus-farming genus of ants, which means they have developed techniques to farm their own food. Clever little critters those Radioheadi are!
