How Video Games Influenced Synth Master Alessandro Cortini

Resident Evil 2 changed my life.”

Alessandro Cortini is best known for his exquisite synth work, both as a solo musician and as a member of the industrial pop group Nine Inch Nails. And while he’s been churning out otherworldly sounds on an array of rare synths for years, Cortini’s life has also been dedicated to another type of knob twiddling: gaming. Just like Credit 00, who treated us to a rundown of 10 retro video games that inspired his brilliant Game Over album, Cortini grew up on a healthy dose of old school gaming like Xenon 2 on the Amiga 500 and Maniac Mansion on Commodore 64.

In a recent feature with Fact Magazine, Cortini mentioned the revelations that he experienced while playing Resident Evil 2, Half-Life and even modern day cult survival game DayZ. His love for the art form runs so deep, in fact, that he has offered to lend his ethereal synthscapes for free if he had the opportunity to soundtrack a game. “I would love to do soundtracks for games,” Cortini said. “I’m surprised, to be honest, that no one has reached out yet for doing stuff like that. I’ve been a gamer for so long, it gives me an edge. I think I’d be good at something like a meeting point between action and adventure… like Half-Life. I’d do it for free, man.” Read the whole piece here. Then, take a listen to the Resident Evil 2 soundtrack below. It’s not hard to imagine Cortini making something equally as chilling.
