Watch Kraftwerk Perform Live With An Astronaut Aboard The International Space Station

This is literally the most cosmic rendition of Kraftwerk ever.

Now into its fifth decade of existence, Kraftwerk is still finding new ways to break the conventions of musical time and space. Last Friday, July 20, during a performance at Jazz Open Festival, Kraftwerk transcended the stage on Stuttgart’s Schlossplatz and indeed Earth itself, beaming directly into the International Space Station.

Kraftwerk were welcomed to the space station by ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst, who conveniently was armed with a  virtual synthesizer. Appropriately, founding member Ralf Hütter and Gerst performed a synth duet of their track “Spacelab”. While Gerst tiggers psychedelic visuals from the ISS, Kraftwerk kick into full gear, performing a propulsive version of the classic cut from The Man Machine. It is by far the most cosmic version of the track that has ever been performed.
